The National Post often has interesting articles on current events. Rex Murphy’s scathing report did not disappoint, and there were two others as well.

Rex Murphy: Curtains for Lance and Oprah

Father de Souza: We should have known better about Lance Armstrong

Bruce Arthur: The Apology Lance Armstrong Will Never Give

Why do I care? I care because I think we need  assurance that the ethical  and moral codes that we try to live by are respected by all and upheld by both peer pressure and the rule of law. However you look on it, Armstrong broke the codes, the rules, the laws in a cold-blooded and deliberate way, and apparently got away with it for years, even while being lauded as a hero!

It is indecent. It is offensive. Added to other upsetting news from around the world,  it makes me wonder about the safety and the sanity of the world I live in. As a humanist who has “given up” on religion, I cannot also give up on innate human decency and common sense!

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.

People like Armstrong defy and defile the Biblical commandments, the rule of law, and trust in human nature. We cannot live without trusting ourselves, each other, and “the system”. They are beneath contempt… broken in a broken social order.

The world is not safe; it is not sane. It is indeed a “broken social order”.
