Banned Book Week 5

The struggle over the banning of books continues most clearly over the teaching of evolution. Two films have been made about the infamous 1925 “monkey trial”.

The 1960 version features Spencer Tracey in one of his most impressive roles.

The story was filmed again in 1999.

Incredible as it may be, this battle continues. In 2006 there was a sensational and hotly fought court battle over using a creationist/intelligent design book as a reference text in science classrooms in Pennsylvania.

If you have forgotten the details, Wikipedia outlines the trial in detail:  Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, as well as the book, Of Pandas and People.

What is your reaction? Do you think lobbyists working from a deeply held religious bias should be allowed to determine what is taught… or not taught… in science classrooms? Or history? Or literature? Or any classroom?
