Yes Please/ No Thanks!

Trust, Integrity, and Skill was the title of my March 18 blog.

I was musing then about the confidence we must have in the people around us, in the professionals we consult, in the social, economic, and political process and its leaders.

Now, in addition to economic and political uncertainty, there appears to be yet another threat to our health and welfare.

There has been a wide-spread recall and warning about ground beef products in many provinces and states. Some of these affect major grocery chains in far-flung areas. Who would have thought that beef products from one Alberta processing plant would end up in so many places, and in such diversity of products!

As I drove through the fast-food strip near the highway this afternoon, I wondered whether the franchised restaurants were selling many hamburgers. Would you be better off, or worse, at the small independent restaurant down the road, when you can’t trust what is in your own fridge or freezer?

We are so fortunate in this affluent… and rather tightly regulated… corner of the world. Usually we can be quite sure that we can drink the water, that the electricity and phones will work, that the snow will be plowed and the mail delivered. I would not be able to drive anywhere without reasonable expectations that my vehicle is sound and that the other drivers are sober, awake, and aware of the stop sign at the corner.

Our food supplies come from all over North America, all over the world. Usually we shop and eat without even thinking of ethical and safety issues.  An emergency like the ground beef recall should remind us to be grateful for this sense of security… and not to take it for granted.

The slide show following this article in The Huffington Post lists The Kinds of Food Poisoning You Should Know (And Avoid)… symptoms, sources, treatments, etcetera:

Campylobacter Enteritis, Cholera, E. Coli Enteritis, Ciguatera (Fish Poisoning), Listeria, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, Shigellosis.

This article lists 10 Types of Food That Can Make You Sick and this one 8 Ways to Prevent Food Poisoning

Now excuse me, while I go make a snack… all this talk about food has made me hungry!
