Look to this Day

Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence:
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendour of beauty.

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision;
But today well-lived, makes
Yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day.

A friend of mine is very, very ill with cancer.  She and her husband have gone into seclusion, answering no calls, receiving no visitors.  One can hardly blame them for wanting to be alone together, without unanswerable questions, expressions of false hope, premature condolences. But I miss her so much! Another friend, who like me does not pray, said it was almost enough to make one relent, if only for the sensation, however false and unrealistic, that you can do something to help.

I no longer pray, but I do like to think through the beautiful Sanskrit poem that reminds me of the joy and opportunity of each new morning. Time means so little until it is too late! There are so many things, for example, I would like to ask my mother about, or to say to her. I miss her wisdom and her humour and her unconditional love.  I miss those in my friend already, but I shall also try to make every day worth while in her honour!

I was upset a few weeks ago by the shocking death of Sarah Burke, the Canadian snow boarder who died tragically at the peak of her ability. Then Saturday I watched some of Whitney Houston’s funeral. So sad.

Her is the best of Whitney singing One moment in Time.

And here is Sarah Brightman doing Memory, from Cats.  It sounds operatic in Italian, but I have copied the lyrics in English.

Strange that the lyrics for both are so poetic when sung, but just sit there awkward and unscannable on the page, but I cannot read either without hearing the melody!

Memory Lyrics

Daylight
See the dew on the sunflower
And a rose that is fading
Roses whither away
Like the sunflower
I yearn to turn my face to the dawn
I am waiting for the day . . .

Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Every street lamp
Seems to beat a fatalistic warning
Someone mutters
And the street lamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn’t give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
The street lamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning

Touch me
It’s so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me
You’ll understand what happiness is

Look
A new day has begun

One Moment In Time
Whitney Houston
By: Hammond/Bettis

Each day I live
I want to be
A day to give
The best of me
I’m only one
But not alone
My finest day
Is yet unknown

I broke my heart
Fought every gain
To taste the sweet
I face the pain
I rise and fall
Yet through it all
This much remains

I want one moment in time
When I’m more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
When I’m racing with destiny
Then in that one moment of time
I will feel
I will feel eternity

I’ve lived to be
The very best
I want it all
No time for less
I’ve laid the plans
Now lay the chance
Here in my hands

Give me one moment in time
When I’m more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
When I’m racing with destiny
Then in that one moment of time
I will feel
I will feel eternity

You’re a winner for a lifetime
If you seize that one moment in time
Make it shine

Give me one moment in time
When I’m more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
When I’m racing with destiny
Then in that one moment of time
I will be
I will be
I will be free
I will be
I will be free
